So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed

Jon Ronson

This one was a fun, quick read. I zipped through it in two days. I’ve already separated myself from social media. I don’t have any accounts beyond LinkedIn where I very rarely comment or post. The internet really brings out the most vile side of people. Like the author, I’ve certainly participated before, but it’s not worth it. If nothing else, I will try to stay conscious of the limited context provided in internet headlines and even articles. Cherry picked sentences can make someone seem like an evil monster, worthy of being torn down to nothing. That’s not necessarily a fair depiction of the full picture. Nobody else is going to stop and work out the details. If anyone ever starts with “Can you believe this person said/did [thing]!?” the response should be “There’s probably more to the story.”

Be kind. Step away from the comment thread. Go outside or something.
