I re-listened to this to prepare for the Self Development Book Club meeting. This was my third lap through the book. The reminder that “you are not your thoughts” is the point that I take away from it. The book is pretty repetitive. I don’t find that to be a significant problem. As I said in the book club, I think it works as a mantra. The book doesn’t give a lot of scaffolding or hand holding to help someone apply it in daily life. According to the author, it’s easy, just let go. We also discussed that the author didn’t provide a lot of references or data to support his message although most of us generally accepted it because it aligned with concepts justified in other books.
Changing external circumstances is a misguided requirement for happiness. “I would be happy if I had ___ or if ___ happens,” suggests that one is enforcing conditions on happiness. The key is finding peace and happiness with what is.
